We’re about 45 minutes away from kickoff and there is a definite buzz in Husky Stadium. There was a lot more energy outside the stadium than I’ve seen in some time, and the Huskies certiainly need it to translate into the stadium.
One thing I haven’t touched on that much as a key is controlling the clock. Washington really needs to run the ball well to keep the Bruins off the field. UCLA doesn’t have the big names it had last season, but there is still talent and outstanding athletes. The longer the Huskies can keep those guys on the sideline, the better their chances.
Washington also can’t afford to give up big plays, especially through the air. The Huskies can’t afford to give up any momentum that the crowd will bring them.
Another thing to watch is turnovers. Washington has been pretty good at holding onto the football, while UCLA has struggled in that department. If the Huskies can get a few early, that will only help the clock management and the momentum.
It looks like Cody Ellis is in uniform and warming up, so he may help out the Huskies receiving depth.
I’ve been surprised by the Arizona State-Cal game. Maybe I was wrong about both teams. If the Golden Bears blow out the Sun Devils, as they’re doing now, that may do some good things for Washington as ASU visits Husky Stadium later this season. The Cougar game sounds like it’s been an ugly one. I’m surprised it’s been such a defensive struggle, as Stanford has a pretty poor defense.
