SEATTLE – Twenty-four hours after his announced departure, University of Washington head football coach Keith Gilbertson appeared rested and in good humor.

Between razzing members of the men’s basketball team, talking politics and joking about his own lame-duck status, Gilbertson actually got around to occasionally answering some questions reporters asked him Tuesday.

One involved how his last 24 hours were.

“I’ve heard from a lot of really great people,” Gilbertson said. “I’ve got a lot of friends in this business. I’ve been in this a long time. You can’t (tick) everybody off.”

Athletic director Todd Turner announced Monday that he and Gilbertson had agreed that Gilbertson would step down at the end of the season. In his second season as Washington’s head coach the Huskies are 1-7.

Without naming names, Gilbertson said he’d gotten calls from many coaches and former players.

“The gratifying thing is (hearing from) coaches you’ve coached against and ex-players,” Gilbertson said. “What the heck. It isn’t good, but it is what it is.”

When asked about the long-suffering quarterback situation, Gilby said, “Marvelous. A day at the beach.”

Then he asked who among the reporters put the questioner up to it.

Gilbertson added that junior Casey Paus would start Saturday.

Injuries: Gilbertson said wideout Charles Frederick might possibly play against Arizona Saturday. Frederick has been bothered by a pulled hamstring he originally injured against Notre Dame.

Frederick ran a couple of pass routes in Monday night’s practice and said the muscle felt tight.

Also, kick returner Anthony Russo (ankle) and safety Dashon Goldson (shoulder) are expected to play. Wideout Quintin Daniels had arthroscopic surgery on his injured knee Tuesday.

Senior fullback Zach Tuiasosopo (leg) may possibly be ready to play in the Apple Cup. Also, reserve quarterback Carl Bonnell’s injured groin would be tested to see whether he can play Saturday.
