I’m at the season-opening girls basketball game for Snohomish and Auburn Riverside. These teams are loaded with talent and are expected to contend for the Class 4A state title in March.
So far it’s been a pretty even game at the Snohomish High gym. Auburn Riverside leads 32-27 at halftime.
Snohomish’s leading scorer so far is Katie Benson. The 6-foot-1 senior scored eight of her 10 points in the second quarter, including a short-range basket and two free throws in the final 25 seconds.
Auburn Riverside, which has committed 13 fouls so far, has been led by guards Mercedes Wetmore and Amanda Thomson (10 points apiece).
Snohomish has had mixed results against Auburn Riverside’s tough full-court press. Most of Snohomish’s eight first-half turnovers resulted because of the pressure.
