Girls Wrestlers to Watch

Jomae Alewine

Lake Stevens junior

Jomae Alewine proves that it’s not just the boys that have all the success wrestling for the Lake Stevens program. After taking first in the Sub-Regional, Alewine placed fourth in the Regional as a freshman and followed it up with yet another fourth-place finish as a sophomore, both times wrestling in the 103-pound weight class.

Julia Perry

Monroe senior

Julia Perry placed first at the Sub-Regional tournament and followed that up with a fourth place finish at state in the 119-pound weight class. Perry, who has wrestled the past five years, finished 14-4 last season and Monroe’s second-year head coach Jeff Boyle believes Perry should place high again in the state tournament.

Tina Alter

Oak Harbor senior

Tina Alter is a veteran of the mat. The senior is wrestling in her fourth and final season for the Oak Harbor Wildcats and one thing has eluded her – a state championship. Alter, who wrestled at 145-pounds, finished fifth at Regionals, qualifying for the Class 4A Mat Classic but did not place. “Last year she hurt her ankle in her first match at state. It was tough for her to matchup. She wanted to improve on that performance. She’s a tough competitor,” Oak Harbor coach Mike Crebbin said. This year she’ll jump up to 160-pounds, which means that it’s possible that Alter will wrestle in the heavyweight weight class. “We expect her to do well. We’re hoping she stays injury free and makes it to state. That’s the first big step,” Crebbin said.

Keely Caldwell Christina Ordonez

Lakewood

There are many similarities between Lakewood wrestlers Keely Caldwell and Christina Ordonez. Both are three-sport athletes running cross country and track. Both excel on the wrestling mats where they had solid seasons in 2007-08. Both had heart-breaking, season-ending losses in the second round of the 2008 Mat Classic and both are looking to redeem themselves this year with a longer stay at state.

Caldwell is a junior who wrestled in the 130-pound weight class and placed second at Sub-Regionals and second in the Region 1 tournament. Caldwell placed second at state as a freshman when she wrestled in the 112-pound weight class.

Ordonez is a senior who wrestled in the 135-pound weight class and took first at Sub-Regionals and finished second in the Region 1 tournament.
