Glacier Peak High School nearly has a full roster of fall sports coaches.
The hirings of Melinda Torre (girls soccer) and Matt King (boys tennis) were announced Wednesday by Snohomish School District athletic director Mark Albertine. Torre and King join the list of coaches who will guide Glacier Peak teams when the Class 3A school opens next fall.
Torre is a Snohomish High graduate who played soccer and basketball for the Panthers. She went on to play soccer for the University of Washington and professionally in Europe, Albertine said.
“She has an outstanding understanding of the game. She’s a good communicator, has a passion for the sport and really enjoys working with kids, and is not afraid of new challenges,” Albertine said of Torre, who is in her second year teaching history at Snohomish.
King, a longtime English teacher at Snohomish, will guide the inaugural Glacier Peak boys tennis team. King spent several seasons as an assistant under Snohomish boys tennis coach Dick Jansen before leaving to spend time with his family.
King will do a great job, Jansen said: “Matt’s a tennis person. He’s always brought an exuberance and excitement to what he does.”
Glacier Peak’s other fall sports coaches are Rory Rosenbach (football) and Dan Parker (cross country). The Grizzlies’ volleyball coach will probably be hired within the next month, Albertine said. He did not mention when a girls swim coach will be selected.
The school’s winter and spring sports coaching openings will be posted in mid-February and mid-April, respectively, said Albertine.
