Glacier Peak rallies to beat Edmonds-Woodway

SNOHOMISH — The Glacier Peak volleyball team regrouped after dropping the second and third sets in their Wesco 3A South contest with Edmonds-Woodway on Tuesday night, winning the fourth and fifth sets to push their league record to 4-0.

Grizzlies coach Chris Pratt said that his team let the Warriors speed up the pace of the match in the second and third sets.

“We had a really hard time matching their athleticism and tempo,” Pratt said. “I told our girls to slow it down and get into our rhythm, because trying to keep up with theirs just wasn’t working. We had to go back to what was successful for us.”

Lauren Sanders led Glacier Peak with 16 kills in the match, but Pratt said it was her work on the defensive side of the net that gave Edmonds-Woodway fits.

“They have a really diversified attack,” Pratt said of the Warriors. “They ran a lot of right side attacks to give our middles some fits, and even attacked from the back row. Lauren’s five blocks were big for us.”

Julia Stepanchenko added nine kills, 20 digs and two aces for Glacier Peak, while Kendra Cooper paced Edmonds-Woodway with 11 kills.

Pratt said winning its first four league matches will pay dividends for Glacier Peak during the rest of its conference slate.

“I think it’ll come into play later on,” he said. “Pilchuck is playing well and Oak Harbor, who we play on Thursday at home, has been a big rivalry for us.”
