TACOMA — A year ago Glacier Peak’s Jeff Bastian and Sean White made a decision after the Class 3A state track meet. The seniors decided they would train together, and though White didn’t compete in the 2010 meet, they made the commitment to run together in 2011.
“Ever since state last year we’ve been planning on competing together at state this year,” White said.
Not only did the Grizzlies’ duo make the finals in Saturday’s 1,600-meter run, but Bastian and White finished in sixth and seventh place respectively. Bastian’s time was 4:17.49 and White finished in 4:19.15.
Bastian and White will continue their athletic careers at BYU — where they plan to be roommates — competing in track and cross country.
Earlier Saturday, White was fourth in the 800, finishing with a time of 1:56.20.
“It was a bit of a disappointment, I hoped to be faster than that,” White said. “There’s some great runners up there. I’m just happy to be up there with them”
Glacier Peak junior Andrew Prentice took home the third place medal in the 400, overcoming a slow start to finish in 50.59. Lakes’ Marquin Russell won with a time of 49.11.
Prentice felt like it was a learning experience that he will be able to use in next year’s competition.
“I’m hoping to get better, ” Prentice said. “It’s something to work on because slow starts aren’t the best thing.”
Prentice anchored Glacier Peak’s 1,600 relay team in the last event of the three-day meet. The Grizzlies came in sixth with a time of 3:27.70.
Oak Harbor’s Josiah Miller finished fifth (22.43) and Everett’s Spencer McKinnon eighth (22.99) in the 3A boys 200. Miller was sixth in the triple jump (43 feet, 2.5 inches).
Lynnwood’s Andrew Basham was fourth in the 3A shot put with a mark of 52-2, finishing a foot ahead of fifth-place finisher Johnny Cortedan of Mountlake Terrace.
Lakewood’s Andre Scott, who won the 2A long jump title Thursday, picked up his second and third medals of the meet on Saturday.
Scott finished fourth in the 200 (22.36) and sixth in the 100 (11.14). He broke the Lakewood record in the 200 and tied school record in the 100. Archbishop Murphy’s James Cameron Guy took eighth in both events.
After a productive weekend Scott was left thinking about the mark he’ll leave on the Lakewood track program.
“There’s a lot of younger prodigies that are going to try to beat my times now,” he said.
Scott’s family is moving to San Antonio, Texas, where he will likely enroll in junior college and compete in track and field. But there is a chance he may end up going to school at a junior college in Spokane. He enjoyed his moment in the spotlight but admitted that the end of his high school career was bittersweet.
“It’s kind of sad because it’s my senior year,” Scott said. “I don’t have anymore of this. “I’m happy to go to the next level in college.”
