Forward Marjorie Heard plans to follow in the footsteps of her hero, Jon Brockman.
Heard, a powerful 6-foot-1 senior-to-be at Glacier Peak High School, verbally committed to play for the University of Washington women’s basketball team, Glacier Peak girls basketball coach Brian Hill said. Heard committed in late July, said Hill.
This past winter, Heard averaged about 17 points and 12 rebounds for Glacier Peak. She led the Grizzlies to the 3A District 1 playoffs in their debut season. Known for her physical style of play and competitiveness, Heard earned Herald All-Area first team and All-Wesco South first team honors.
Besides Washington, the main schools that recruited Heard were Iowa State University, Kansas State University, the University of Nebraska and the University of Arkansas. In the end, Heard preferred to stay close to home and go where former Snohomish High star Brockman had so much success, Hill said.
“Her idol is Jon Brockman and he’s a Snohomish guy. Actually, she wants to marry Jon Brockman, and she plays a lot like him,” said coach Hill.
Verbal commitments are non-binding. Heard and other Class of 2010 prep basketball players can sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent in November.
During the summer, Heard worked hard to round out her game, Hill said. She improved her outside shooting, learned new inside scoring moves and worked on controlling her body to avoid unnecessary fouls, the coach said.
“Her outside shot was coming along pretty good,” said Hill, “and she’s got a lot more finesse inside now. It’s not just all power.”
