For tomorrow’s paper I’m writing about Everett’s success in overtime. In conjunction with that I figured I’d present the following research. The Tips find themselves in a tight three-way battle for fourth place in the Western Conference, and thus the final home-ice spot for the first round of the playoffs. In that context every point is crucial, including those bonus points from winning in overtime or a shootout. Here’s how those three teams have fared in those situations:
Seattle: 1-5 in OT and 2-2 in SO for three points out of a possible 10. (.300).
Kelowna: 4-2 in OT and 4-6 in SO for eight points out of a possible 16 (.500).
Everett: 6-0 in OT and 4-3 in SO for 10 points out of a possible 13 (.769).
So if Everett ultimately wins the race for fourth, the Tips can give a healthy share of the credit to their ability to prevail in games that go that extra distance.
Now as to the fact that a game that goes into overtime is worth three total points while a game that ends in regulation is only worth two … well, let’s just say I’ve got a few issues with that.
One other note. Saturday’s overtime winner, which was originally credited to Dan Gendur, has been changed to Shane Harper on the deflection.
