Got a slogan for the 2011 Mariners? Ideas welcome

While the Mariners prepare for some live batting practice this morning, crews (and ballplayers, too) are getting ready for another of those rites of spring training – shooting the team’s annual TV commercials. Three days of shooting for the five commercials will begin this afternoon.

The Mariners’ marketing executives are here to facilitate the shoot, which seemed like a prime opportunity for me to ask Kevin Martinez, the team’s marketing director, a question that’s been on my mind much of the offseason.

What is the Mariners’ slogan for 2011?

We’ve gone all winter and haven’t heard anything. It made me think that maybe the “Believe Big” backfired so badly last year that no slogan in 2011 might be better than something.

Martinez assures us that there will be a 2011 slogan, although it won’t be divulged until the TV commercials are released in mid-March. Prying as much as we could, he wouldn’t leave even a hint as to the chosen slogan. It’s a pretty safe guess that it won’t be as bold as “Believe Big,” which flirted with and then crossed the sports marketing line of promising success.

Bottom line here is that we can only assume what the new slogan will be and also have a little fun guessing what some of the rejected ideas might have been. Here are 10 that I’m figuring we won’t see:

• “You gotta get to know these guys”

• “2010? What 2010?”

• “Take no prisoners, make no promises”

• “Fear the ’stache”

• “Fear the mohawk”

• “Pitching, defense and TWO(!) runs a game”

• “Smoak but no mirrors”

• “Don’t look at the standings until June … of 2012”

• “Who needs runs to have a good time at the ballpark?”

• “We’re going to (insert your own word here) you”

So there are 10 we surely won’t see. Got a slogan of your own for 2011? Feel free to add to this list.
