Grace Academy ousted from district playoffs

MOUNT VERNON — Neither team established itself as the favorite throughout the entire first half, then in the 63rd minute Mt. Vernon Christian launched a corner kick into a crowded bunch in front of the goal. Mark deVries was able to get his foot on the ball and send it into the goal, for the 2B/1B District 1 playoff game’s only score.

“It was a pretty even game. It should have gone to a shootout,” Grace Academy coach Mark Ruhlman said.

The loss ended the Eagles season, while the Hurricanes will advance to face Shoreline Christian at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kasch Park in Everett in a seeding game to the Bi-District tournament. Shoreline Christian defeated Lopez 1-0 (forfeit). La Conner plays North Sound Christian at 4 for the district championship.
