Granite Falls blanks Archbishop Murphy

GRANITE FALLS – The Granite Falls baseball team defeated Archbishop Murphy 10-0 at Bruce Miller Sr. Sports Complex in Granite Falls.

The Tigers showed why they are atop the Cascade Conference standings.

Scott Kalma started the action in the bottom of the first inning, hitting a two-run home run to ignite Granite Falls’ offense.

The game was called after six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Granite Falls (4-0 in conference, 4-1 overall) excelled in all areas of the game, scoring 10 runs on 15 hits and committing no errors.

“We played solid defense and that was nice to see,” Granite Falls head coach Doug Engstrom said.

He also praised pitcher John Pennington, who pitched all six innings, struck out nine and allowed only one hit.

“Pennington threw a great game,” Engstrom said.

Pennington is 2-0 over his last two games, defeating Coupeville on March 14. In 12 innings he has 13 strikeouts and allowed only one earned run.

Josh Knudson was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Jullian Gamache went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead Granite Falls.

Dylan Healow was 1-for-2 for Archbishop Murphy (4-2, 6-2) with the Wildcats’ only hit, a single in the second.

“He pitched pretty well too,” Engstrom said.
