BELLINGHAM – Granite Falls went into its match Tuesday against Meridian with the two schools tied atop the North Cascades Conference standings with identical 4-0 league records. When the match ended, despite Meridian’s win in three straight games, 15-6, 15-9, 15-10, the playoff seedings for the district meet were as muddy as before the match.
Denise Wilbur led the Tigers (4-1 in league, 8-3 overall) with a perfect 15-for-15 night from the service stripe and had 11 kills. But that wasn’t enough to overcome a tough Meridian (5-0, 10-1) defense that featured Cassie Braaten with 12 kills and four blocks.
Going into the final week of competition, both schools have three league matches, including games against Lynden Christian, a team tied for second place with Granite Falls at 4-1. Nooksack Valley, another contender for the highly desired top two spots, hurt their chances with a loss at Mount Baker.
The top two teams each get a bye in the opening round of the bi-district tournament.
