Granite Falls ousted

ANACORTES – The Class 2A defending state champion won’t be returning to this year’s tournament to defend its title.

Granite Falls, the 2006 state champion, saw its season end with a 6-1 loss to Burlington-Edison Saturday afternoon in a 2A District 1 loser-out game.

Granite Falls entered the tournament as the favorite, losing only one Cascade Conference game. The Tigers lost two of three games at the district tournament.

Burlington-Edison’s Travis Alvord was 2-for-4 with a double and home run to lead the Tigers to the state tournament berth. Burlington-Edison held Granite Falls to two hits.

Cedarcrest 7, Archbishop Murphy 4: At Anacortes, Mark Bishop hit a home run, walked twice and scored three runs to lead Cedarcrest to a Class 2A District 1 winner-to-state playoff game victory. Cedarcrest’s Dakota Bunce was 2-for-3 with a double. The loss ended Murphy’s season.

Following its victory over the Wildcats, Cedarcrest lost 6-0 to Burlington-Edison. Cedarcrest is the No. 4 seed from District 1. Burlington-Edison is the No. 3 seed.

Meadowdale 4, Shorecrest 3; Shorecrest 4, Mount Vernon 3 (nine innings): At Mount Vernon, the Mavericks used two walks, two hit batsmen and a single to score four runs in the fourth inning as Meadowdale captured the No. 1 seed from District 1 in the Class 3A state tournament. Riley Reynolds was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple for Shorecrest. The Mavericks have defeated the Scots three consecutive times.

Shorecrest rebounded to capture the final 3A state tournament berth with a 4-3 victory in nine innings over Mount Vernon. Shorecrest’s Pierce Rankin was 2-for-5 and teammate Anthony Jochim was 2-for-3.

Darrington 14, Seattle Lutheran 4 (six innings): At Stanwood, shortstop Brennan Vincent’s two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning, combined with two Seattle Lutheran errors, helped the Loggers score five runs en route to victory in the Class 2B Tri-District championship game.

All 10 Darrington players reached base as the Loggers advanced to the the state regional next weekend in Mountlake Terrace.

Mount Vernon 4, Everett 3 (nine innings): At Mount Vernon, the Bulldogs scored the winning run on a controversial call with two out in the bottom of the ninth in the Class 3A District One loser-out playoff game. The loss eliminated Everett from postseason play. Jake Fraunenholtz had a triple for the Seagulls.

Lakewood 1, Sultan 0: At Duvall, Evander Ochoa scored an unassisted goal in the 20th minute to secure a Class 2A state playoff berth for Lakewood.

At Cedarcrest H.S.

Goals-Lakewood: Ochoa. Goalkeepers-Sultan: I Gonzalez. Lakewood: Karrenberg. Records-Sultan 13-6-0 overall. Lakewood 12-7-0.

Ferndale 1, Arlington 0: At Arlington, Ferndale capitalized on a scramble for a loose ball in front of the net, scoring the game’s only goal late in the second half. The victory in the Class 3A District 1 loser-out game advanced the Golden Eagles to the state tourney and sent the Eagles home.

Bellingham 1, Cedarcrest 0: At Duvall, Bellingham claimed the Class 2A No. 1 seed from District 1, defeating the Red Wolves on their home turf. Cedarcrest will be the No. 2 seed from the district.

King’s 1, Charles Wright 0: At Mount Vernon, Charles Friberg scored the lone goal to lead King’s to the No. 1 seed from Class 1A District 1/3 in its inaugural season.

At Mount Vernon H.S.
