The Seattle Mariners have won the Ken Griffey Jr. sweepstakes.
After several days of contract offers, negotiations, reports that he had agreed to a contract with the Atlanta Braves and Griffey’s denial that he had made a decision, he has chosen the Mariners.
“We are confirming that we have agreed to terms with Ken Griffey Jr.,” said Randy Adamack, the Mariners vice president of communications. “We’re still working on getting everything to prepared to make an announcement. But we are confirming that he’s confirmed to us that he’s coming to the Mariners.”
Adamack said Griffey notified the team about 5:30 p.m. (Pacific time).
Griffey is expected to be in uniform at spring training in Peoria on Saturday or Sunday.
