SEATTLE — Carlos Guillen, who spent a week in the hospital after being diagnosed with tuberculosis, played catch Tuesday morning and may progress to a more rigorous workout today.
Dr. Chris Beaty, a pulmonary specialist at Northwest Hospital, will examine Guillen this morning and, if he approves, clear the Mariners’ shortstop to practice with the team.
"If it goes well, he will take ground balls and light batting practice," Mariners trainer Rick Griffin said.
Griffin said Guillen had lost about 10 pounds during his hospital stay, but is back up to 198 on his way to his 202-pound playing weight.
"He was down about 10 pounds, but in the last three days he has been eating quite a bit," Griffin said.
Guillen got a huge cheer from the crowd during pregame introductions, and he took the lineup card to umpires during their meeting at home plate.
"I feel real excited," Guillen said. "I was real sick in the hospital."
