The teams are in the locker room and Washington leads 52-37. All in all, it’s been an impressive debut, as the team looks like it’s been playing together for awhile. The passing has been really impressive, especially amongst the post players. Spencer Hawes is a terrific passer and Jon Brockman has been good too. Brockman showed off his newfound jump shot and rebounded strong, as usual.
Adrian Oliver has settled down and he and Quincy Pondexter had some nice plays between them. Phil Nelson is the only one of the freshmen who hasn’t done much, missing three 3-pointers and turning the ball over a couple times. Harvey Perry, making his debut, looks good, really athletic and smooth in the Bobby Jones mold. Pondexter has been compared to Jones too and looks like him defensively, but has more of an offensive game than Bobby did, at least early in his career. Hans Gasser is also giving the team some nice play off the bench.
Washington is shooting 54 percent at the half and is outrebounding Pepperdine 21-14. The Waves also have 13 turnovers.
Pondexter has 11 points and four rebounds and Brockman has 12 points and five rebounds. Hawes has six points and three assists in nine minutes. In fact, as a team, the Huskies have 14 assists on 20 baskets, a pretty good ratio. Six guys have at least two assists.
The second half starts in about a minute.
