Quarterback Gibran Hamdan, who was named most valuable player of NFL Europe last summer, has returned to the team less than two months after being cut at training camp.
The Seahawks were looking for depth at the quarterback position because of starter Matt Hasselbeck’s knee injury, which should sideline him for at least three games.
It is unclear whether Hamdan or second-year player David Greene will serve as Seneca Wallace’s primary backup this Sunday, but the NFL Europe star was signed partly because he was familiar with the Seahawks’ system. Hamdan, 25, has been with the Seahawks in each of the past two offseasons, although injuries hampered him on both occasions.
In four NFL seasons with Washington and San Francisco, Hamdan has made only one appearance and attempted only two passes, one of which he completed for a seven-yard gain.
To make room for Hamdan, the Seahawks released kick returner Willie Ponder, who has been unspectacular since replacing Josh Scobey in that role. Ponder ranks 15th in the NFL in kickoff returns, averaging 23.5 yards per clip since being signed on Sept. 5.
