KIRKLAND – They might not make the playoffs, but the Seattle Seahawks have a chance to boast the best record in football this season.

At home, that is.

The Seahawks (8-6) are one of four NFL teams with an unbeaten record at home, joining Kansas City, St. Louis and New England. Seattle has a chance to finish a season unblemished for the first time in franchise history with a win over the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday.

“If we could do this on Sunday and win all our games at home,” coach Mike Holmgren said, “I think that is establishing something here that could be pretty good for a long time.”

The Seahawks went 7-1 at home during a 12-4 season in 1984, when they lost their final regular season game to Denver at the Kingdome.

Since 1999, only one NFL team – the 2002 Green Bay Packers – has finished a home season unbeaten.

“That would be quite an accomplishment,” wide receiver Bobby Engram said of the possibility of going unbeaten at home. “To defend the home turf would be huge.”

Injury update: The Seahawks should have more available bodies for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

Five players did not practice Wednesday due to injury, although most of them expected to play this weekend.

Linebackers Chad Brown (foot) and Randall Godfrey (bruised ribs) took the day off but are not listed on the team’s injury report, meaning they should be available for the game.

Three reserves – cornerback Willie Williams (foot), linebacker Orlando Huff (ankle) and offensive lineman Jerry Wunsch (ankle) – sat out the practice and it is uncertain whether they will play Sunday. Wunsch is holding out hope that he can return to the team for the season finale next Saturday.

Right tackle Chris Terry, who missed two practices last week, was excused from Wednesday’s session for personal reasons.

Linebacker Anthony Simmons (neck) and safety Reggie Tongue (hamstring) returned to practice after missing all of last week with injuries.

Quick slants: Pro Bowl selections will be announced today at 4 p.m. … Quarterback Trent Dilfer was named the Seahawks’ recipient of the NFL’s Ed Block Courage Award, which is given to players who serve as inspirations to their teammates. … The Seahawks still have 1,200 tickets remaining for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. They can be purchased by calling 206-622-HAWK.
