After several days in which increasing numbers of players were absent from practice, the Seahawks were about as close as they’ve been to full since the first few days of camp.
A long list of players who were absent or limited yesterday were back today, including center Chris Spencer, who went down Friday with an ankle injury. Joining Spencer in the list of players coming back today were linebacker Lofa Tatupu, cornerback Josh Wilson, defensive end Lawrence Jackson, linebacker Will Herring, safety Deon Grant, and receiver Nate Burleson. It’s worth noting that several of those players weren’t dealing with specific injuries, but rather getting a break after a long, physical camp. Still, it’s a good sign for a team preparing for its first preseason game that so many people were back on the field.
Missing today were left tackle Walter Jones (back), guard Mansfield Wrotto, guard Cory Withrow, guard Grey Ruegamer (elbow), cornerback Marcus Trufant (back), and DE Patrick Kerney. And for those I didn’t list an injury for, it’s because we’re still awaiting word from the team.
Today’s practice, like last night’s was in full pads, and featured a bit of hitting, though not as intense as what we saw during goal-line drills yesterday.
Today provided yet another example that the offense won’t get the same preferential treatment it did under Mike Holmgren. When the team was working on two-minute drill situations, the No. 1 offense tried to fool the defense by faking a spike to kill the clock, then throwing a quick pass. Matt Hasselbeck’s pass was intended for Burleson, but Kelly Jennings broke it up, perhaps a bit too much contact. The offense wanted a penalty, but Jim Mora wasn’t going to give one out.
After two more incomplete passes, the offense felt slighted again when the clock failed to stop after the third-down incompletion.
The No. 2 offense did get a touchdown in the two-minute drill, with Seneca Wallace connecting with Mike Haas, who made a great leaping catch in the back of the end zone.
