SHORELINE — For teams like Shorewood, there are league matches and then there’s games against heavyweight Meadowdale.
The Wesco 3A league-leading Mavericks (8-1 league, 10-1 overall) have a 2.5 game lead over Lynnwood and sport one of the league’s most balanced rosters led by senior outside hitter Lindsey Milner.
Thursday, the Mavericks swept Shorewood (4-4, 5-5) three games to love via scores of 25-14, 27-25 and 25-20 in a match that was probably over before it even began.
“My girls get really intimidated anytime they hear we’re playing Meadowdale,” Shorewood head coach Jennifer Chartrand said. “The girls were definitely excited for the match and we played them stronger than we did earlier in the season … but I think they get a little psyched out.”
Mavericks seniors Payton Shrum and Emily Denham led the way with 24 assists and seven kills respectively. Sophomore Sloane Morrison added six kills while both Denham and sophomore Amy Rickel each served 100 percent.
Meadowdale jumped on Shorewood from the outset, taking the first set comfortably. Although, Shorewood came out strong in the second, the Mavericks were able to battle back to win the game and essentially crush any momentum Shorewood had managed to build.
Junior Marianne Kellogg dished out 29 assists for the Thunderbirds while Monica Postor had 13 kills and six digs. Senior Molly Whipple added 13 kills and eight digs.
“We definitely had a slow start,” Chartrand said. “In the second set we jumped on them, got the lead but weren’t able to hold it.
“(My girls) fought and finished really hard, but we just didn’t get a jump on it early enough. (Meadowdale) is a pretty well rounded team and everything was clicking for them.”
