Highland Christian tops Lummi

ARLINGTON — The newest football program on the block has experienced unexpected success.

That’s the way Highland Christian Prep head coach Joey Brown explained his team’s 3-2 start after a 34-20 Northwest 1B League win over Lummi on a rain-soaked night at Haller Stadium Tuesday.

Stormee Brown had three touchdowns, Vince Kurtzenacker added a touchdown pass and run and Highland Christian’s defense held Lummi scoreless through the first half, a rarity in 8-man football.

“I’m surprised. I didn’t exspect this kind of success from a first year program,” coach Brown said.

The win was Highland Christian’s third straight and allowed the Knights (2-1 league, 3-2 overall) to move ahead of Lummi (1-1, 5-2) in the standings.

Kody Mattson anchored the defense with six tackles and a fumble recovery and Jon Enge (eight tackles) and Jeff Kelly (six tackles) also paced the Knights’ defense.

“The defense has definitely picked it up the last two games. The defense is really catching up with the offense,” coach Brown said.

Stormee Brown had touchdown runs of 49 and 15 yards and Caleb Brown added a 14-yard run for the Knights and scored a third on a 5-yard reception from Kurtzenacker.

Caleb Brown added a 14-yard run for Highland Christian.
