BAYTOWN, Texas — Robert Hight qualified sixth Saturday in the NHRA Spring Nationals in his bid for a fifth straight Funny Car victory.
Hight had a run of 4.140 seconds at 309.56 mph in his John Force Racing Ford Mustang, while Cruz Pedregon, topped the field with his Friday pass at 4.103 and 306.19 in a Toyota.
Hight is attempting to tie the Funny Car season record of five straight victories set by Don Prudhomme in 1976 and matched by Pedregon in 1992 and John Force in 1993 and 1994. Prudhomme holds the overall record of seven consecutive victories, winning the last two races in 1975 and the first five in 1976. John Force Racing has won all six Funny Car races this season, with Force taking the season-opening Winternationals.
Hight will face Tony Pedregon in the first-round of the final eliminations.
In the other divisions at Royal Purple Raceway, Morgan Lucas was the No. 1 qualifier in Top Fuel, Allen Johnson topped the Pro Stock competition, and Hector Arana took the top spot in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
