The Seattle Mariners handed reprieves to their pitchers in the past week like they were lollipops. But even Horacio Ramirez may have run out of licks this time.
The struggling left-hander was pulled without getting an out in the first inning Saturday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. It might _ and should _ be his final appearance for the Mariners this year and, perhaps, forever.
Ramirez’s contract runs out after this season, and it’s difficult to imagine the Mariners signing him up for another year of this _ a 7.16 earned run average and absolultely no sign of competitiveness in his past two starts. On Monday, Ramirez lasted 1 2/3 innings against the A’s.
Manager John McLaren has been more lenient than most in running his struggling starters back to the mound. Thursday, Jeff Weaver lasted 1 1/3 innings and McLaren has decided he’ll get anoother start.
Ramirez got his reprieve after Monday’s flop, but don’t expect another.
