The Cal State-Northridge women’s basketball program will add a dose of toughness to next season’s team.
Katie Holloway, a 6-foot-3 senior center for the Lake Stevens High School basketball team, recently signed an NCAA letter of intent to play for the Matadors next season.
"Katie has a nice body frame and likes to be physical in the post," Cal State-Northridge coach Tammy Holder said on the school’s Web site. "She’s a great finisher inside and doesn’t mind the contact. She comes from a great summer program, loves the game and enjoys playing it."
Holloway, a senior, averaged 11 points and approximately 10 rebounds per game last season while leading the Vikings to their first trip to the state playoffs in 17 years.
Holloway’s sister, Chelsey, plays for Seattle University.
New league looks like a go: A new seven-school league appears to be set for next season, according to Northwest District secretary Kim Wilson. The Northwest District received letters from seven schools — Archbhishop Murphy, Cedarcrest, Granite Falls, King’s, Lakewood, South Whidbey and Sultan — expressing their intentions to join a split 2A-3A league that will be called either the Cascades League or Cascade Conference. Cedarcrest and South Whidbey will be 3A. King’s and Archbishop Murphy, currently 1A schools, will opt up to 2A. Athletic Directors from the seven schools met in October with goals of forming a competitive league and reducing travel costs and missed class time for students. Cedarcrest and King’s still must gain approval to change districts, but Wilson said that’s likely to happen.
Angry defenders: Sure, they’d just held the Cascade Christian football 40 points below its season average. And, yes, Archbishop Murphy won 27-6 to earn a spot in its second straight Class 1A state championship game. But letting a shutout slip away when the Cougars scored with 2:55 remaining in Saturday’s semifinal was a bitter pill for the Wildcats to swallow.
"We should have held them," said Jevon Butler, who rushed for 199 yards and played safety on defense. "Too many mistakes."
Linebacker-defense end Doug VanderWel also was not pleased.
"We kind of let up there at the end," said VanderWel, who recorded two sacks. "We just weren’t working together."
Ennisisms: Archbishop Murphy football coach Terry Ennis, when asked what he thought of the play of his defense in the semifinal, said: "I liked it. We always like them, but sometimes they don’t play the way we want them to."… On not recalling what play the Wildcats ran when they converted fourth-and-1 from their own 36-yard line early in the second quarter: "Actually, I don’t remember the play. Great call though, wasn’t it?"
Weak turnouts leads to co-ops: Because of low turnouts for the Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace swim teams, the two Edmonds School District teams will combine with the other two programs in the district, Terri McMahan, the Edmonds School District athletic director, said. Lynnwood, which has two participants, will compete with Meadowdale’s team. Mountlake Terrace (10 swimmers) will join Edmonds-Woodway. Lynnwood and Terrace swimmers will represent their own schools in the postseason.
