LANDOVER, Md. – There was a lot of blame to go around after the Seattle Seahawks’ most recent road loss, but head coach Mike Holmgren was adamant that the venue should not be listed among the excuses.
“It had nothing to do with playing on the road, so let me answer that question before you even ask it,” he told reporters shortly after a 27-20 loss to the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field. “Once you get inside the lines, you’re inside the lines. The crowd was not a problem for us. The noise was not a problem, which is the main thing with going on the road.”
Despite Holmgren’s contentions, the statistics tell a different story. The Seahawks have dropped their last three road games, giving them a 1-3 record away from Seattle this year. They are 5-0 at home, including wins against division rivals St. Louis and San Francisco.
The defense has allowed an average of 353.3 yards per game in four road contests, as compared to 291.8 at home. Perhaps most important of all, Seattle is 4-for-4 on potential game-winning drives at home and 0-for-2 away from Seahawks Stadium.
Despite the discrepancies, no one is willing to use things like time changes, long flights or unfamiliar surroundings as an excuse.
“I don’t believe that on-the-road stuff,” wide receiver Koren Robinson said. “That doesn’t fly with me. When you’re playing on the road, you’d better be ready to play regardless.”
