Among the highlights are a Wesco 4A softball clash between nationally ranked Jackson and Glacier Peak.

A few prep sports events to watch this week:

Softball: Jackson at Glacier Peak, 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. Defending state champion Jackson opens conference play against a Glacier Peak squad looking to make its mark as one of Wesco 4A’s elite teams. Ranked No. 20 nationally in MaxPreps’ XCellent 25 poll, the Iyanla Pennington-led Timberwolves are off to a dominating 6-0 start, having outscored opponents 73-10. The hard-throwing Pennington, a Coastal Carolina signee, will face several college-bound hitters in Glacier Peak’s powerful lineup.

Baseball: Lake Stevens at Jackson, 4 p.m. Wednesday; Jackson at Lake Stevens, 4 p.m. Friday. This conference-opening series should provide a good measuring stick for Lake Stevens. Picked sixth in the Wesco 4A preseason coaches poll, the Vikings have slugged their way to a surprising 5-1 start while averaging 9.5 runs per game. Jackson, coming off a district title and state quarterfinal appearance last season, is the league favorite in the coaches poll.

Boys soccer: Meadowdale at Snohomish, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday; Meadowdale vs. Marysville Pilchuck, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Edmonds Stadium. Meadowdale is off to a 5-1 start, having posted five consecutive shutouts and outscored opponents 16-1. This week, the Mavericks put their five-match win streak on the line against the top two teams in Wesco 3A/2A from last season. Snohomish and Marysville Pilchuck are both unbeaten after playing to a 1-1 draw this past Saturday.
