I expected a huge turnout this past Friday at the Marysville-Pilchuck vs. Lake Stevens football game. But the overflow of fans was even more than I imagined.
According to Lake Stevens athletic director Ed Bailey, the crowd size was 4,329. That’s the highest attendance during Bailey’s seven years at the school. With both the home and visitor’s bleachers absolutely packed, hundreds of fans stood at field level near the fence-lined edge of the track, which surrounds the field.
I can’t remember covering a regular-season football game that attracted a similarly massive crowd, although some of the Stilly Cup rivalry games between Arlington and Stanwood a few years ago probably came close.
Speaking of Marysville-Pilchuck, the 6-0 Tomahawks are ranked No. 8 in the new Associated Press Class 4A state football poll. The other ranked local teams are Archbishop Murphy and South Whidbey (both in 2A).
Here are the complete rankings.
