Human wins key match as Lake Stevens wins tournament

FEDERAL WAY – Lake Stevens’ Ty Human defeated returning state champion Jessie Getchel of Heritage High School 1-0 in the 119-pound championship final of the Decatur Tournament at Decatur High School on Saturday night.

The Vikings had four wrestlers win their weight classes and had nine top-three finishes on their way to the team title in the 12-school tournament. Lake Stevens scored 185.5 points while Heritage had 175 to finish in second place. Decatur scored 160 for third place and Highline had 120 for fourth.

Human, along with teammate and 160-pound champion Christian Anderson, were named outstanding wrestlers of the tournament.

Eric Curnett (130) and Ryan Anderson (189) were the other tournament champs for the Vikings. Travis Warrington finished second in the 103-pound weight class, while teammates Josh Bergman, Nick Selway, Mitch Canham and Matt Leonard all had 3rd place finishes for Lake Stevens.

Everett Classic Chris Whiteman, at 215 pounds, pinned Bothell’s Mike Lisenby in the third period to help Oak Harbor win the tournament. Kevin Lang at 112 and John Garcia at 119 pounds also contributed victories for Oak Harbor during the eight-team event.

Panther Classic Tony Kubec, at 125 pounds, and Jesse Claderon. at 215, won their weight classes to help Cascade finish in second place. Brad Kihm of Snohomish won the title at 152.

Edmonds District Invitational: Woodinville’s Trevor Mayer (130) and Brendan Dallas (145) won their respective championship matches by decision to help the Falcons finish first in the tournament. Sky Croft highlighted Jackson’s showing with a pin in the 160-pound title match. Lynnwood’s Reese Cogdill was the Royals lone champion, pinning his opponent in the first round of the 215-pound match.

Shoreline Invitational: Shorecrest reeled off four consecutive victories, two of which came against eventual second place finisher O’Dea, to win the tournament. Jesse Davis, at 140 pounds, ignited the Shorecrest spurt by defeating O’Dea’s Dominic Dorsett 5-4 in overtime. Zach Rel (145), Travis Meske (152) and Anthony Matney (160) also collected victories for Shorecrest..
