BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – Thalo Green scored a career-high 20 points and Washington started each half with a 9-0 run in a 67-47 victory over American University of Puerto Rico on Wednesday night in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic.
The Huskies (5-3) will play No. 17 Alabama, which beat Northern Iowa 64-56, in the semifinals today.
The run at the start of the second half gave Washington its biggest lead of the game, 44-23, with 16:47 to play.
The Pirates (1-3), the Division II school that serves as host to the tournament, then went on a 17-4 run to get within 48-40 as the Huskies went 4:15 without a field goal.
Green, whose previous best was 17 points against New Mexico earlier this season, then scored down low to start a 13-3 run that gave the Huskies control again.
The senior forward, who came in averaging 11.7 points, was 7-for-9 from the field in becoming the first Washington player to score 20 points in a game this season.
Greg Clark of the Huskies added 10 points, all in the second half, and also had eight rebounds.
Joan Hernandez and Joseph Rodriguez each had 11 points for the Pirates, who shot 27.5 percent (14-for-51), including going 0-for-11 from 3-point range.
