EL PASO, Texas – Roy Smallwood scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Texas-El Paso to a 74-62 victory over Washington Thursday night.
Brian Stewart hit a basket with 17:13 left in the second half to break a 41-41 tie and give UTEP (3-4) the lead for good. The Miners biggest margin was 14 points.
Doug Wrenn had 19 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs, to lead Washington (5-2). But he also had a game-high six turnovers. Grant Leep, a Mount Vernon High School grad, scored 18 points for the Huskies while reserve Josh Barnard came off the bench to add13.
Washington shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but could only manage 26 percent in the second half. The Huskies also out-rebounded the Miners 48-36.
UTEP shot 44 percent from the field in the first half and 52 percent in the second half.
The Miners were able to score 22 points off of turnovers.
