Ok, so maybe a refernce to “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” is a little lame, but the Huskies do seem to have lost something last night when Stanford handed them their first double-digit loss at Hec Ed since Dec. 3, 2003.
So if it was their home-court mojo that went missing, consider Brook Lopez (31 points, 13 rebounds) Dr. Evil.
Ok, enough of that. Many apologies.
Anyway, bad movie refernces aside, the Huskies do need to figure out what went wrong and get better in a hurry to avoid a sweep in a Pac-10 home series for the first time since 2004.
A bounce back win tomorrow is certainly not a given against Cal, especially after the Bears upset No. 9 Washington State in Pullman last night.
“It was a terrifying feeling last night losing here to Stanford, and it was a felling I’ve never felt in my year and a half being here as a Husky,” Quincy Pondexter said when he met with reporters today. “Right now it’s one of those times that we really have to find another identity again. It sucks to be saying that in the middle of the season, but it’s true. We have to come out and figure out exactly what was winning those games for us and go back to doing that.”
Lorenzo Romar said while the loss was concerning, he’s not panicking yet.
“This is always a place we can count on that we’re usually going to do a good job,” he said. ” Let’s just hope this was an apparition… If it happens again in another four year, all right, we’ll take them every four years if that happens, but let’s just hope this isn’t a pattern. I’m big into patterns as opposed to once. Early on, the free throws weren’t a pattern, now they are so it’s a concern.”
If you clicked on the link to that Cal vs. WSU story, you already know this, but Cal Center DeVon Hardin missed the game with a viral infection. We don’t know yet if he’ll play tomorrow, but Romar is convinced that Hardin will play. And the last time there was a similar situation, Romar called it right, so we’ll believe him for now. When the Huskies were in Tempe to play ASU, talk was that James Harden might miss the game with an injury, but Romar predicted the star freshman would play, and he did.
