WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Stanford women’s basketball player Chiney Ogwumike has been voted Pac-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.
Meanwhile, Washington’s Kelsey Plum was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Plum is the Huskies’ leading scorer at 20.9 points per game, fourth-best in the Pac-12.
The awards, voted on by the league’s coaches, were announced Tuesday. Hall of Fame Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer earned John R. Wooden Coach of the Year honors for the fourth straight season and 14th time overall in 28 seasons at Stanford. The coaching award was renamed after the late Wooden during the 2010-11 season.
Ogwumike, a senior, led the fourth-ranked Cardinal to their 14th consecutive conference regular-season crown, averaging 27.0 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. She also had 13 30-point performances.
