SEATTLE – Joe Wolfinger, a 7-foot center from Beaverton, Ore., signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play for the University of Washington men’s basketball team.
He is the Huskies’ final commitment, completing a seven-man class that has been ranked among the best collection of recruits in the nation by several analysts. A 2004 graduate of Aloha High School, Wolfinger averaged 14.2 points per game his senior season and helped lead the Class A Warriors to their first playoff appearance since 1997. He currently is attending Mount Hermon prep school in Northfield, Mass.
Wolfinger also was recruited by Cincinnati, Florida State and Georgia Tech.
Scout.com, which rated the UW’s recruiting class as the country’s fourth-best, ranked Wolfinger as the West’s 11th best center prospect in the class of 2004. Last week, Wolfinger was listed as one of the top 15 unsigned players from the class of 2005 by national recruiting analyst Jeff Goodman.
Also signed by the Huskies are state recruits Jon Brockman (Snohomish High), Artem Wallace (Toledo High) and Martell Webster (Seattle Prep High) and out-of-state talents Justin Dentmon (Carbondale, Ill.), Harvey Perry (Henderson, Nev.) and Roburt Sallie (Sacramento, Calif.).
Washington is ranked 22nd in the Associated Press poll and No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, its first preseason rankings since 1998. The Huskies begin their 2004-05 regular-season schedule on Friday against Seattle Pacific.
