SEATTLE — Washington head football coach Steve Sarkisian compared Monday to the last day of school.
Of course, it was only the beginning for the University of Washington football team.
The Huskies wrapped up their final Seattle practice of the 2011 season just before noon Monday, and now they’ll take a few days off before departing for San Antonio on Friday. UW and 15th-ranked Baylor square off in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29.
“They’re excited to go see their family and friends, obviously,” Sarkisian said after Monday’s practice, which was closed to the media. “I know they’re excited to get down to the game and prepare and then ultimately play in the game on national television, which is a great opportunity.”
Most of the coaches and players will do a pseudo Christmas with loved ones sometime this week, and then the Huskies plan to celebrate as a team at a ranch on Sunday morning. A practice will follow, and then UW has just three more days before its second consecutive bowl appearance after six years without postseason inclusion.
“Our guys really want to get down there,” Sarkisian said. “I know we have a few days off right now, and some guys are taking advantage of that. But I think if I told them we were going down to play on the 21st, they’d be excited for that too. We go on the 23rd, and I know we’ll be fired up when we get there.”
