SEATTLE — Daniel Te’o-Nesheim was one of the few bright spots during a dismal season for Washington, and on Thursday night, the junior defensive end was the biggest winner at the team’s postseason awards dinner held at the downtown Seattle Sheraton.
Te’o-Nesheim earned the Sports Radio 950 KJR Defensive Player of the Year award, and also won the Guy Flaherty Award, Washington’s oldest and most prestigious individual award, which is given to the team’s most inspirational player.
Te’o-Nesheim also took home the John P. Angel Lineman of the Year Award for defense, while center Juan Garcia earned offensive honors, as well as the L. Wait Rising Lineman of the Year Award.
Te’o-Nesheim and Garcia were named team captains along with senior tight end Michael Gottlieb and senior defensive tackle Johnie Kirton.
Sophomore receiver D’Andre Goodwin won both the Team MVP award for offense, which is voted on by players, and the Sports Radio 950 KJR Offensive Player of the Year award.
Linebacker Mason Foster won the Team MVP award for defense, while linebacker Chris Stevens was honored for his specials teams play. Linebacker Donald Butler and safety Nate Williams shared the King-TV Most Improved Players Award for defense, while Gottlieb earned offensive honors.
Kirton, a Jackson High School grad who came to Washington as a running back, played tight end, then eventually moved to the defensive line, was awarded the Chuck Niemi Big Hit Award. Fullback Paul Homer won the Earle T. Glant Tough Husky Award.
Receiver Jermaine Kearse won the Travis Spring Most Outstanding Freshman Award for offense and defensive end Everrette Thompson was named the top freshman on defense.
