PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — The season ended Saturday for the University of Washington men’s team when the Huskies were shut out 5-0 by top-ranked Texas in the quarterfinals of the NCAA golf championship.
The Longhorns then beat Oregon to advance to today’s championship match against Alabama, which beat California in the semifinals.
Saturday was the third time a Husky team had advanced as far as the quarterfinals in NCAA golf championship play. And it was the third time a UW team has been bounced from the first round of match play.
“I’m disappointed, but I’ve had losses that hurt a lot worse,” Husky coach Matt Thurmond said. “I thought we played pretty well today. We did what we wanted to do, we didn’t give them a lot of holes and make many mistakes.
“(Texas) just played amazing. I don’t know even if we played our best today if we could have beat them.”
