BERKELEY, Calif. – Joe Shipp scored 18 points, and freshman Jamal Sampson had 15 points and a season-high 17 rebounds as California beat Washington 62-50 on Thursday night.
The Golden Bears (12-3, 3-2 Pac-10) won their second straight conference game and improved to 11-0 at Haas Pavilion. Cal is off to its best start since 1988-89.
Doug Wrenn, coming off three straight 20-point games, scored 19 points and David Dixon added 11 for Washington (7-10, 1-6), which lost for the eighth time in nine games.
Although the Bears’ defense, ranked first in the Pac-10 Conference, held the Huskies to 50 points, they were unable to take full advantage of the 21 turnovers committed by Washington. The Bears shot just 34 percent from the floor and went 4-for-17 on 3-pointers.
After trailing 33-31 at halftime, California scored six straight points in the opening minutes of the second half, taking the lead on Dennis Gates’ tip-in.
The Bears maintained the lead throughout the second half and widened it to eight points on Shipp’s 3-pointer with 2:02 left. Shipp’s two free throws in the final seconds sealed the victory.
Washington never trailed in the first half as Wrenn scored 10 points, including two 3-pointers.
