HENLEY, England — The University of Washington made a strong showing in a dominant day by U.S. rowers at the Henley Regatta on Wednesday.
The Huskies rowed to a 3¼-length victory over Manchester University of England in the Temple Challenge Cup for student eights, which the UW won in 2010. Four other American crews also advanced in the Temple Challenge Cup competitions under overcast skies.
Apart from Phillips Exeter’s loss to Eton College of England in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup, American crews won every race against British boats in the famous Henley Regatta, which attracted a record 133 overseas crews this year in its 163rd edition.
Defending champion Harvard was far too strong for England’s Durham University in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup, and Brown thrashed Michigan by 4¾ lengths in an all-American matchup in the same event for student-coxed fours.
Harvard had two boats in the event and both progressed comfortably, the university’s “B” crew beating Drexel by three lengths.
Tabor Academy, Belmont Hill School, Gonzaga College High School and Groton School all reached the second round in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup for schoolboy eights.
An American crew was disqualified in the morning session’s third race while competing the against London Rowing Club’s “B” crew. Potomac Boat Club from Washington, D.C., was warned by the umpire during the early stages for poor steering before being disqualified for clashing blades just a quarter of a mile down the course.
The ruling eliminated the only U.S. boat from the Wyford Challenge Cup, an event for club fours.
