In-league woes continue for Archbishop Murphy boys

Herald staff

LA CONNER – Coming on the heels of an overtime loss at Friday Harbor on Tuesday, the Archbishop Murphy boys basketball team needed to avoid being on the losing end of another close Northwest A League game.

No such luck.

Blame for Saturday’s 48-42 loss to the La Conner Indians begins with 15 first-half turnovers by the Wildcats, continues with a 7-for-21 night at the free throw line, and ends with a series of missed opportunities in the closing minutes of the game.

But the result is that the Wildcats are backed into a corner as the heart of the season plays out.

“This loss means that there is no slacking from this point on,” said a frustrated Wildcat head coach Jerry Zander. “There is a lot of league play left, but for us every remaining game is critical.”

The Wildcats are 0-3 in league play with seven games remaining after the loss at La Conner.

Coming back from a 12-point halftime deficit, the Wildcats closed to within a point with a minute remaining. After missing a five-foot attempt, the Wildcats fouled and sent La Conner to the line. The Indians sank the free throws and posession went back to the Wildcats.

With 41 seconds showing on the clock, the Wildcats got an open look at a 3-point shot, but failed to put the ball through the hoop. A few more successful trips to the foul line by the Indians closed out the game and the Wildcats’ chances at a league win.

Kyle Mulholland of Archbisop Murphy led all scorers with 13 points. John Dan led the Indians with 12 points.
