Inclement weather delays start of prep basketball playoffs

Inclement weather had already forced numerous high school basketball regular-season finales to be rescheduled, and now it has pushed back the beginning of several district tournaments.

The first round of the boys and girls 4A district tournaments has been moved from Thursday to Friday night. Those games will feature matchups between seeds Nos. 3-6 and will be hosted by the higher-seeded teams.

The top two Wesco 4A seeds receive first-round byes and are slated to face the first-round winners in Saturday’s district semifinals at Snohomish High School. The top two teams from the six-team, double-elimination 4A tournaments will advance to the state regional round.

The play-in games for the 3A boys district tournament also have been moved from Thursday to Friday night.

With Squalicum being the only 3A boys district qualifier from the Northwest Conference, the top nine Wesco 3A teams will advance to districts and the top five will earn first-round byes. Wesco 3A teams Nos. 6-9 will square off in two loser-out, play-in games Friday hosted by the higher-seeded teams. The winners will advance to the eight-team, double-elimination bracket, which is slated to begin Saturday with first-round matchups hosted by the higher seeds.

No NWC teams have qualified for districts on the 3A girls side, meaning the tournament will feature the top eight Wesco 3A teams in an eight-team, double-elimination bracket with no play-in games. The first round will remain on Friday night, with the higher-seeded teams hosting.

For both the boys and girls 3A district tournaments, the top four finishers will advance to the state regional round.

The 12-team 2A boys district tournament is scheduled to begin with four loser-out, play-in games Thursday between seeds Nos. 5-12, as determined by an RPI formula created by the district’s 2A athletic directors. The play-in games will be hosted by the higher-seeded teams. The winners will advance to an eight-team, double-elimination bracket that begins Saturday with first-round matchups hosted by the higher seeds. The top three finishers advance to the state regional round.

The 2A girls district tournament takes on the same format, but currently the play-in games are scheduled for Wednesday and the first round for Friday.

The opening round of the six-team, double-elimination 1A district tournaments was pushed back to Wednesday, with the semifinals slated for Thursday and loser-out games on Friday. Saturday’s title games and third-place games will be held at Mount Vernon High School, with the rest of the tournament hosted by the higher-seeded teams. The top four district finishers will advance to the bi-district tournament.
