Dave Telford is back in the coaching ranks.
Telford, who resigned as the head football coach at Monroe High School last November, has been named the quarterbacks coach at Indiana State University.
The Sycamores’ head coach, Trent Miles, announced the hiring Wednesday.
“I have known Dave for 15 years and cannot say enough about his loyalty, character and integrity,” Miles said in a press release. “He is an excellent coach and role model.”
Telford has previous college coaching experience at Fresno State, Montana State, Eastern Washington and Portland State. A 1984 graduate of Stanwood High School, Telford went on to play quarterback at Fresno State, where he still holds the single-game records for completions (40), pass attempts (70) and passing yards (536).
“Dave has been very successful as player and coach at the (NCAA) Division I level,” Miles said in the press release. ” His playing career, as a quarterback at Fresno State, is still in the record books. He comes from one of the best coaching trees in the business, having played for Jim Sweeney at Fresno State and working closely with Jeff Tedford of California. He brings coordinator experience and is one of the best fundamental and technique coaches in our profession.”
In 2008, Telford took over a Monroe football team that did not win a game in 2007. In his three seasons, he compiled an 8-22 record and last fall had the Bearcats in playoff contention until the final game of the regular season.
“He left the program in better hands than when he got it,” Monroe athletic director Brett Wille said at the time of Telford’s resignation. “He took a program that was pretty much not going anywhere and really got us on the right path and did some great things.”
