LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Kentucky high school football coach charged in the death of a player who collapsed at practice says his heart is broken and part of his life has been taken away.
Coach David Jason Stinson made his first public comments Saturday since he was charged with reckless homicide Thursday. He told dozens of supporters at his home that he loved 15-year-old Max Gilpin, who died three days after collapsing during a sweltering practice in August.
Stinson told supporters he “lost one of my boys. A boy that I loved and a boy that I cared for and a boy that meant the world to me.” Stinson said it’s “a burden I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”
Heat exposure deaths happen occasionally in football, but it doesn’t appear that a coach has ever been criminally charged.
