WEST ALLIS, Wisconsin — Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves has crashed in qualifying for the AJ Foyt 225.
Castroneves bounced off the wall on Saturday qualifying at the Milwaukee Mile. The Brazilian driver was not injured, but his Penske Racing No. 3 Dallara sustained considerable damage and he will start Sunday’s race from the rear of the 20-car grid.
Castroneves, acquitted in April on charges of U.S. tax evasion, was riding high after winning his third Indy 500 last Sunday. He goes into the race in suburban Milwaukee just five points behind IndyCar Series leader Dario Franchitti.
