NEWTON, Iowa — The IndyCar Series and Iowa Speedway are close to completing a two-year extension that will keep the Iowa Corn Indy 250 on the circuit’s schedule through 2011.
The series and Iowa Speedway currently have a two-year deal that runs through Sunday’s Iowa 250.
Iowa Speedway has proven itself to be a strong host for the IRL even though it’s not near a major market and sits about 40 miles east of Des Moines. Nearly 36,000 fans attended the Iowa 250 in 2007 and nearly 40,000 came last year. Officials were expecting a crowd of about 42,000 for Sunday’s race.
The track has installed 6,500 more seats this year and plans to have as many as 60,000 seats for the U.S. Cellular 250. The NASCAR Nationwide series race is set for Aug. 1.
