The most interesting thing to come out of Tyrone Willingham’s daily meeting was the there was a strong chance that tight end Michael Gottlieb will place Saturday against UCLA. Gottlieb has missed the last two games with a broken hand. That would certainly help the Huskies, who haven’t had any success in two-tight-end sets since Gottlieb and Robert Lewis went down. Gottlieb is Washington’s best blocking tight end and having him there may free up Johnie Kirton more to be a threat as a receiver. Willingham said Walt Winter would remain at tight end regardless of when Gottlieb and Lewis come back.
Willingham also said receiver Cody Ellis is practicing on a limited basis and is wearing a red shirt. Ellis has missed the entire season with a broken clavicle. I’d be pretty surprised if Ellis becomes a major factor in the passing game this year.
Dashon Goldson was “very limited” in practice Tuesday after not playing last week, and Willingham wasn’t sure if he would play this week. I wouldn’t be too surprised if they held Goldson out for one more week, even though it’s likely that the Bruins will throw the ball, certainly more (and better) than Fresno State. I think Willingham thinks the team is in a pretty good position after last week’s win and would like to give Goldson another week off to see if his ankle sprain improves with a couple week’s of rest.
