The first half couldn’t have gone much better for Washington, but what a dumb way to end it. Why would the Huskies do a short kick after taking a 10-0 lead? I understand not wanting to give up a big return but Cal’s offense wasn’t looking good, I say make them go the length of the field. Don’t help them out with field position. It was practically handing the Bears some points.
Still, to be up 10-3 going into the half and getting the ball to open the second half, that’s a pretty good position to be in. Washington has to be a little concerned with injuries, especially to Kenny James and possibly C.J. Wallace, who missed the last series. Louis Rankin had a good, strong run on the final drive so maybe something clicked with him. Carl Bonnell has been good running the offense, throwing and running well and really making plays. The UW defense has been active, getting to the running back and making some plays in the backfield.
Washington is also controlling the clock, which was one of my big keys coming in.
It’s going to be interesting to see if scoring to end the half gives the Bears any momentum. If so, that kickoff was an even worse idea than I think it was. But Washington has to be feeling pretty good and playing with some confidence. If it can come out with a good, long drive and get some points to make it a two-score game to open the half, it would make things even more interesting.
