James Lawrence, an Ironman triathlete nicknamed the Iron Cowboy, has crossed the final finish line of his 50th triathlon in 50 days.
He set a goal several years ago to break his own world record for the most Ironman courses completed in a year. He wanted to do one triathlon per day for 50 days on courses in each of the 50 states. He started his 50-50-50 challenge this summer.
His third stop was Lake Stevens on June 8. He crossed the 50th finish line Saturday in his home state of Utah.
Lawrence didn’t qualify for the world record because he completed some courses on treadmill or elliptical workout machines after he injured his hip in one race and had stormy weather for several others, Triathlete.com reported. An Ironman course is a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon-length run.
The Iron Cowboy’s goal was to raise money for a nonprofit that provides nutritious food for children and to teach people about fitness and inspire children to be active. People donated $68,000 during the 50-50-50 challenge for the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation, Lawrence announced on social media. He plans to make a documentary about his experience as the Iron Cowboy.
