Issaquah wins third straight 7-on-7 Cougars Passing Tournament

The weather was perfect on Saturday for the 4th Annual 7-on-7 Cougars Championship Passing Tournament at Lakewood High School. The event featured 20 teams.

Issaquah successfully defending its title, beating Kamiak 41-14 in the finals. It was Issaquah’s third straight first-place finish in the

tourney. (See complete results below.)

Along with my 16-month-old daughter Fiona, I stopped by the tournament for a few hours. We watched several round-robin games, including Lakewood’s win over Prosser and Kamiak’s dominating triumph against Coupeville.

I got my first look at new Lakewood quarterbacks Justin Peterson and Kolby Schueller. They had plenty of talented pass-catchers to throw to, including 6-foot-6 Oregon State University recruit Dustin Stanton.

I also was very impressed by Kamiak QB Anthony Berg, who is tall, strong and poised. He displayed good balance and threw a nice, tight spiral while completing an array of short-, medium and long-range passes.

But Berg didn’t win the tournament Offensive MVP award. That honor went to Issaquah QB Ethan Kalin, who guided the Eagles past the Knights in the championshp. Lakewood’s Brandon Stott won the Defensive MVP award.

For the first time in the history of the 7-on-7 event, there was also a linemen competition. The Lineman MVP was Stanwood’s Carlos Vilchis, who did 27 repetitions of 185 pounds in the bench press contest. Bethel won the linemen team championship.

Here are game-by-game results from the passing tournament, starting with round-robin games.
