It takes a mathemetician to calculate that the Mariners still have a chance to make the playoffs.
After a 7-4 loss Tuesday night to Oakland, the Mariners’ 15th loss in 17 games, it’s not even easy to look at the math and see this as a playoff team.
Jarrod Washburn lost his fourth straight decision and his eighth in the past nine decisions, young relievers Eric O’Flaherty and Sean Green again showed the strain of this time of the year, and the Mariners offense did little with their 11 hits, including eight in 4 1/3 innings off A’s starter Dallas Braden, who was 1-7 witha 6.63 ERA.
The Mariners are 9 1/2 games behind the Angels in the AL West and 6 1/2 behind the Yankees in the AL wild-card standings. With 19 games to play, they still have a mathematical chance.
The way the Mariners are playing, iwith their pitching in shambles and the offense unable to jump on a beatable young pitcher such as Braden, it just doesn’t add up.
